Union Pumpkin Festival is an all October long harvest festival and fall celebration that takes place in the heart of autumn culminating on Halloween weekend.
Fall is a time for the coming together of community and the celebration of both family and the bounty of the harvest the world over. On the Olympic Peninsula the first misty fall rains awaken in the surrounding wood a cornucopia of mushrooms. The nearby Olympics become peppered with secret groves filled with chanterelles, where connoisseurs compete in a little known, age old competition to be the first picker of the season.
Harvest time has come to Washington and apples are everywhere on the menu, from freshly baked apple donuts to piping hot apple cider. In Union, at Hunter Farms, the pumpkin patch is ripe with fields of orange – hay rides, treats, and games for the kids happen every day in October (9:00 AM - 5:30 PM). The town of Union embraces the fall spirit – you'll want to check out the fine dining, lodging and shopping, all featuring the best the season has to offer.
Northwest historian Stewart Holbrook once wrote that “Union City, Washington” has “disappeared altogether from the map.” The announcement of the town’s death was albeit a bit premature, though as a result the town of Union can be found in old books on “ghost towns” of the west. Still parts of Union have gone missing – most notable is the Freemason's Pioneer Cemetery, though there is a sign for it right off McReavy Road near the Union Food Mart and gas station, the graveyard itself has become lost in the woods. The historic old graveyard is aptly named, because finding it requires some pioneer skills.
The McReavy mansion, built in 1883 in Union, sits on the hill directly across from the Hood Canal Marina, adjacent to the Union Country Store. The old Victorian mansion is purportedly the oldest standing structure along Hood Canal, and has been vacant for over forty years. Ghost stories cling to it like burrs on an overgrown hiking trail. The Friends of McReavy House, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, celebrated their 10 year anniversary in 2016. With a new board and officers, much progress has been made to renovate the heritage house, with future plans to open the house to the public.
Experience all or some of PumpkinFest, and discover that even in evergreen country nature puts on that rich and golden livery, calling out that the bounty of the season awaits you in Union.
