Nov 16    Haydn "The Creation"
The almost childlike cheerfulness of Haydn’s music and its fusion of exuberance, originality, classical elegance and intellectual power placed Haydn far and away above the level of all except Mozart amongst his contemporaries. Hailed as a genius throughout Europe, admired and revered by the public and by his peers. Mozart said, ‘Haydn alone has the secret both of making me smile and of touching my innermost soul’. Even Napoleon, on capturing Vienna, immediately ordered a guard of honor to be placed round Haydn’s house. "The Creation" represents a considerable development over its Handelian predecessors, and Haydn’s bold use of orchestral color, adventurous harmony, rhythmic and melodic inventiveness, and the work’s strong unity bring the subject to life with an almost operatic vividness and power.

Featuring soprano Tess Altiveros, tenor Will Gardner, and bass Charles Robert Stephens with the combined forces of the Great Bend Chorale and Youth Chorale under the direction of Matthew Melendez.

Nov 29    Community Open House - City Manager Finalists
The Shelton City Council is pleased to announce five finalists for consideration as Shelton’s first City Manager under the new council-manager form of government. The City retained Slavin Management Consultants out of Atlanta, Georgia to conduct the nationwide recruitment. Earlier this year, sitting councilmembers and various community members worked with the consulting firm to develop a position profile. The City received 24 applications from the Northwest and around the country. After extensive review and completion of background checks, the Council has invited the five finalists to Shelton for interviews on Thursday, November 29th and Friday, November 30th.

Finalists for the City’s top position include:

Anthony R. Hemstad, Senior Advisor, State of Washington Treasurer’s Office. Anthony has worked in public policy at the local, state, national and international levels. He served as City Manager for the City of Maple Valley, WA for five years.

David B. Kelly, Senior Consultant, Magwest. David has experience in finance, human resources, risk management, and public works. He served as the City Administrator for the City of Selah, WA for two years.

Scott W. Meszaros, Town Administrator, Town of Meeker, Colorado. Scott has experience in local government, education, and management. He served as an elected member of the Town Council for the Town of Monument, CO for three years.

Jeffrey A. Niten, Community Development Director, City of Ridgefield, Washington. Jeffrey has worked as a planner, project manager, and department head for local governments. He has served as the Community Development Director of the City of Ridgefield, WA for three years.

Keith Stahley, Community Planning and Development Director, City of Olympia, Washington. Keith has over thirty years of local government experience, with an emphasis in economic development. He has served as the Community Planning and Development Director for the City of Olympia, WA since 2005.

Following final interviews on Friday, November 30th, the City Council will meet and deliberate on the candidates. The Council is in hopes of announcing the new city manager in early December.

ROLE OF THE CITY MANAGER

Under the council-manager form of government, the City Manager is like the CEO of a company. The City Council acts as the Board of Directors, with the Mayor acting as the Chairman of the Board. The City Manager is hired by the City Council and, like a CEO, is responsible for all city administration, hiring department heads and other staff, ensuring laws and ordinances are followed, submitting a proposed budget, and implementing policies and organizational goals set by the Council.

The Council has identified the following major goals for 2018 through 2020:

Ensure financial sustainability and stability
Provide great customer service
Develop the long-range community vision
Support community economic development
Expand community information and involvement
Ensure that the City’s organization and staffing requirements will meet current and future needs
Support community and intergovernmental collaborations
