May 3    Free Dump Day
United Way of Mason County, in partnership with Mason County Public Works & Republic Services presents Free Dump Day! Vouchers to dump up to 1,000 lbs. of household garbage will be given to 150 Mason County residents (one per household) to be used at the Mason County landfill on May 3. These vouchers are good for on trip only, limited to 1,000 lbs of garbage (additional costs will be paid by voucher holder). 

Vouchers will be available February 26 - March 26 or while supplies last at United Way of Mason County at 536 W Railroad Ave, Shelton, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, Tuesday through Thursday. Vouchers can only be redeemed at Mason County Landfill on May 3.

To receive a voucher, come to United Way with your valid ID and proof of residence (phone bill, utility bill, etc.). There is paperwok to fill out.

May 4    South Sound YMCA 32nd Annual Spring Run
The Spring Run offers a challenging, scenic, chip timed and certified 10K route, as well as a 2-mile neighborhood route for the whole family. The morning kicks off with the Kids' Run! Followed by the 10K run/walk!

The race starts and finishes at the State Capitol. Enjoy spectacular views of the lake while celebrating the beauty and uniqueness of Olympia. Walkers are welcome.

May 4    Matlock Old Timers Historical Fair

Every year, Matlock hosts the Old Timer's Historical Fair at the Mary M. Knight School campus. Admission is free. Here you can find fun for the whole family. Enjoy live music, delicious food (especially the amazing homemade pies!!!), historical displays, a variety of crafts and even an exhibit of an authentic Civil War-era military camp!

The fair celebrates Matlock heritage in timber industry, draft horses, early day machines and motors, blacksmithing, antique booths, kids activities, handcraft items, historical events, agricultural events, food, fire wood raffle, prizes, and live music. 

Be sure to stop by the John Tornow Museum located at the event. This is the story an "Unsolved mystery," a century later. “Victim or Villain?” is the true story of events a century old. John Tornow lived in the Matlock area and his memory lives on in the museum open during the Fair. Other attractions include kids train rides,  tractor pulls, plant and starter vegetable sale,  crafts and antique booths, antique and classic cars, tractors and steam engines.

May 7    Government Affairs Committee Meeting
The Chamber's Government Relations Committee monitors and facilitates discussion related to local, state and federal government impacts that may affect the business community of Mason County.
 
The committee also responds to concerns expressed by local businesses, considering input from Chamber members and affected stakeholders. The committee works through business issues that may require public policy positions by the Chamber and then makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees.

The committee attempts to be broad-based, representing the diverse sectors of the Chamber?s membership and is comprised of eight voting members and a committee chair who is appointed by the Chamber Board President. The eight voting committee members are required to submit an application and are appointed annually by the Board of Trustees.

Any Chamber member may attend committee meetings and provide input; only committee members may vote. Members of government entities or municipalities must receive permission from the Chair prior to attending each meeting. Meetings are the Thursday of each month at Smoking Mo's from 10:00 - 11:00 AM and are chaired by Lisa Perry, SPI.

Healthy, Economical And Tasty (HEAT) Cooking Classes are starting soon! Shelton School District has teamed up with Washington State University's Mason County Extension to bring you a free cooking and nutrition class!

HEAT Cooking Classes are hands-on and interactive. During class you will:
- Cook a meal with the help of a professional nutritionist
- Learn about nutrition labels
- Practice knife skills
- Look at portion control and the food groups
- Taste your meal
- Gain knowledge on thrifty meal shopping and meal planning
- Have fun!

- HEAT Cooking Classes are open to ANYONE over the age of 16 in Shelton School District or the community

May 9    Government Relations Committee Meeting
The Chamber's Government Relations Committee monitors and facilitates discussion related to local, state and federal government impacts that may affect the business community of Mason County.
 
The committee also responds to concerns expressed by local businesses, considering input from Chamber members and affected stakeholders. The committee works through business issues that may require public policy positions by the Chamber and then makes recommendations to the Board of Trustees.

The committee attempts to be broad-based, representing the diverse sectors of the Chamber?s membership and is comprised of eight voting members and a committee chair who is appointed by the Chamber Board President. The eight voting committee members are required to submit an application and are appointed annually by the Board of Trustees.

Any Chamber member may attend committee meetings and provide input; only committee members may vote. Members of government entities or municipalities must receive permission from the Chair prior to attending each meeting. Meetings are the Thursday of each month at Smoking Mo's from 10:00 - 11:00 AM and are chaired by Lisa Perry, SPI.

Diabetes and pre-diabetes have become a national health concern that everyone should be aware of, with an understanding of how hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) must be regulated in the prevention and management of diabetes.

MGH&FC Certified Diabetes Educator Carmen Eucker, RN, BSN, will discuss the effects, prevention, and treatment of hypoglycemia, explaining it in detail and answering any individual questions or concerns.  The meeting is open to anyone affected by diabetes or pre-diabetes, friends and family members of those managing the condition, and anyone with an interest in learning more about diabetes and its prevention.

Get Ready to Ride! Nothing quite like a carnival. Brings back memories of yesteryear building memories of tomorrow. Complete with rides, games, and of course all those delicious treats that you can only find at these types of events.

Running for 4 days and featuring rides of all types and for all ages. With amusements, games and food vendors it is a must when taking in this Festival.

The Carnival's location will be 2505 Olympic Hwy North, Shelton, WA

Pre-sale carnival tickets are available at the Chamber Office and The Shopper for $25.00 and includes 5 game tickets!

Regualr ticket prices are one dollar each and wristbands are available for $35.
